Beautifully poetic and full of compassion, this story of how a family, suffering from the tragic loss of a child, moves to Orkney to seek new beginnings is told by 10 year-old Isla. Struggling with her grief and the weight of her mother’s as well, Isla seeks solace at the nearby beach where she soon encounters the local seals. This is a truly lovely story, which weaves in the Scottish folkloric creatures Selkies as a metaphor for grieving and letting go. It deals with the very difficult subject of loss with sensitivity, and the feeling of warmth and reassurance that ooze from the pages are greatly aided by the stunning artwork, with each double-page fully illustrated. A beautiful, sensitive tale for those who are facing bereavement, but that can most definitely be enjoyed by all.
