Cole’s family is struggling to make ends meet and, when his mother’s job at the local museum is under threat, he decides to try to solve the clues posed by a Victorian painting at the museum and find the treasure that the clues are said to lead to. But when Cole’s own painting catches the eye of a famous artist visiting his school, and is sold for £1000, he sees a new chance to solve his family’s financial problems. But the intensity of media attention and the huge pressure to produce another painting lead Cole to tell a small lie, with big consequences.
This is a really well-paced story that keeps the reader involved and rooting for Cole from start to finish. Cole is such a likeable character and his friendship with Mason and Isla is heartwarming. The story explores some serious issues of poverty (both financial and emotional), bullying, families, friendship, truth and lies, but always with a light touch. Highly recommended.
