A Dickensian setting, a feisty heroine, a magical house under a witch’s curse and a cast of characters that includes a wizard in pyjamas and fluffy slippers, a troll with an apron and feather duster, and a kilt-wearing spoon - what’s not to love?
Nine is an orphan and a pickpocket, desperate to escape her lonely and very difficult life. When she steals a small, house-shaped ornament, she unwittingly finds herself entering a magical world and, on the promise of a jewel as a reward, she agrees to help the house’s strange inhabitants lift the curse that has been put on their house.
This is a wildly imaginative, fun-filled rollercoaster of a story, but also a heart-warming story of a lonely girl finding friendship and a home, albeit an unusual one.
